From the natural syrup for sore throat to leading primary research in collaboration with the world’s foremost scientific institutions.
"I started working at Greece’s oldest herbal and homeopathic pharmacy while I was still studying at the University of Athens’ Pharmacy School. In 1992, I took over the pharmacy. Within five years, I had built a unique lab for making homeopathic remedies — a place where I deepened my knowledge of natural ingredients and their uses, creating more than 3,000 herbal formulations.
Word spread quickly. First, people from all over Athens, and soon from across Greece, were coming to the pharmacy for these remedies. Those years shaped my philosophy and eventually led me to found KORRES Natural Products in 1996 — with a clear mission: to create natural skincare that is safe, clinically effective, and something I would proudly offer to my friends and loved ones."
Lena Philippou was the first to join the brand-new company, fresh out of university as a Chemical Engineer.
“I was one of the few girls back then who chose Engineering — my mind has always leaned toward analytical thinking and problem-solving. But beyond logic, I'm a passionate person. I love nature, I love all things natural — and above all, I’m deeply connected to Greece.
The moment I walked into the original Korres pharmacy, I knew I had found my place. Everything about it felt right. I wanted to combine nature and science to create the most effective natural products — and make them proudly in Greece.”
The very first KORRES product was an aromatic herbal syrup with honey and aniseed — a soothing recipe inspired by rakomelo, the traditional spirit-with-honey drink that George’s grandfather loved in his hometown on the island of Wild Rose Moisturizer,
Naxos.
The first KORRES skincare product, the Wild Rose Moisturizer, was born from the pharmacy’s most popular remedy: Wild Rose oil. People would line up for this miracle oil, known for helping to improve the look of discolorations and marks, revealing radiant, healthy-looking skin.
Since we couldn’t find the natural formulas we were dreaming of, we built our own Formulation Lab — free from parabens, silicones, mineral oil, propylene glycol, and many more chemicals — at a time when this approach was almost unheard of.
The very first product born in the KORRES Formulation Lab was our Greek Yoghurt Cooling Gel. The idea came from a beloved Greek tradition: using yoghurt to soothe sunburned, sun-stressed skin. But bringing real, edible yoghurt into the lab was a disaster! It took three years of meticulous, groundbreaking work to stabilize yoghurt — keeping all its amazing benefits — in a skincare formula, for the first time ever globally.
Primary research is in our DNA — it all began with homeopathic remedies in our pharmacy. Today, KORRES proudly leads primary research on natural ingredients across the EU, contributing to major discoveries. Our Molecular Lab scientists collaborate with top academic and research institutes to unlock nature’s most powerful actives for the common good. A milestone initiative — a 4-year global study of 3,600 natural extracts — pushed the frontiers of knowledge on antioxidant, anti-aging, and sun protection properties. Thanks to this dedication, KORRES introduced 7 new ingredients to WINCI, the global INCI directory for cosmetics, including our signature Black Pine and White Pine extracts, delivering visible, proven results.
Taking full ownership and responsibility led us to one of our boldest decisions: creating our very own Production Plant.
After years of planning, sourcing top-tier equipment, and securing the necessary funding, we finally achieved this milestone in 2006 — ten years after the company was founded.
Driven by a commitment to excellence, our Production Facility now operates at a level that meets the highest international standards, certified with:
• ISO 9001 (Quality Management)
• ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
• ISO 22716 (Good Manufacturing Practices for Cosmetics)"**
At the heart of our Production Facility lies a state-of-the-art Water Purification System, producing the ultra-purified water used in every single KORRES product.
Our zero-waste system combines Reverse Osmosis and Deionization technologies to deliver a continuous, uninterrupted flow of high-purity water.
To ensure consistent quality, we conduct daily checks at 10 critical sampling points across the system as part of our rigorous control plan.
The result? KORRES Water has a conductivity of less than 1μS — making it nearly 5 times purer than EU Pharmaceutical Standards and over 200 times purer than standard bottled drinking water.
Our Soil Lab is rooted in people and their land — in the communities and the ingredients they nurture. A series of conscious, heartfelt decisions guided us along the way. The first decision was to focus on Greece’s most powerful herbs, including the extraordinary wealth of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. In collaboration with the 5 Agricultural Unions, 30 micro-farmers, and over 1,000 families across Greece.
we identified the ideal regions for cultivation based on soil and microclimate conditions.
The second decision was to never harvest from the wild. Instead, we chose to cultivate all our herbs, protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity.
The third decision was to support — not compete with — local farmers. Rather than creating our own farms, we chose to partner with communities and invest in organic, sustainable farming.
Today, the KORRES Soil Lab is a growing network of 5 Agricultural Unions, 30 micro-farmers, and over 1,000 families across Greece. They provide us with exceptional, organic herbs. We, in return, ensure them a stable income — especially vital in Greece’s more remote and less developed regions.
In our early years, we were shocked to realize that we couldn’t use Greece’s extraordinary herbs in our own formulations — simply because there were no extraction facilities in the country. To produce extracts, we would have had to export our herbs abroad and re-import the final extracts. That made no sense to us.
Determined to change that, we set our minds on building an in-house Extraction Lab. In collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Department of Pharmacy – Section of Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry – we developed a fully green, clean, and zero-waste extraction facility.
We only use natural solvents and gentle processing techniques that preserve the integrity of each active compound. And because we believe in circular practices, all naturally processed solid residues are returned to the farmers to be used as organic fertilizer.
A full circle — within the bigger Circle.
The KORRES Design Lab was created as a meeting point where graphic designers, architects, industrial designers, illustrators, and photographers come together to ask the most accurate, targeted questions — in order to deliver the most appropriate, eco-friendly creative answers.
Aesthetics are at the heart of everything we do.
